Course Content:
This course is the first course in an eight-course sequence, which constitutes the Certificate Program in Sanskrit through the Bhagavad Geeta offered by Hindu University of America. It provides an alternative route to achieving Sanskrit Proficiency. It enables students to learn both the Bhagavad Geeta through the Sanskrit Language, and the Sanskrit Language through the Bhagavad Geeta. In this course, the Faculty will lead the students verse by verse, in sequence through the Bhagavad Geeta, while simultaneously unfolding both the meanings of the verses as well as the nuances of the language.
This course will introduce students to the following elements of the Sanskrit language: verbal roots (dhatu), nouns, pronouns – first, second, and third-person usage, different forms of verbs, i.e., tenses – past, present, and future, cases (vibhakti), and common sentence formation and structure used in the Bhagavad Geeta.
Learning Objectives:
In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Geeta in the following areas:
- Use of pronouns, persons, and numbers.
- Recognize common Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases.
- Discover building blocks of the language through everyday conversation.
- Understand the use of the 2nd and 6th case-endings and words ending with a vowel.
- Identify and use verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms according to the tenses
