SAN3002 – In this course, which will be taught in the Sanskrit Language, students will build upon their initial knowledge of the Bhagavad Geeta gained from the previous course SAN3001. They will improve their proficiency in simple structures of the Sanskrit Language, which will be illustrated through Shlokas of the Bhagavad Geeta from Chapters III and IV.  Students will enhance their knowledge of Sanskrit writing and vocabulary.  Using special handouts, each verse of the Bhagavad Geeta will be expounded to unravel both the meaning of the verse and the structure of the language.  Students will enhance their ability to approach the Bhagavad Geeta in its native Sanskrit medium.

Course Content:

This course is the second course in an eight-course sequence, which constitutes the Certificate Program in Sanskrit through the Bhagavad Geeta offered by Hindu University of America. It provides an alternative route to achieving Sanskrit Proficiency. It enables students to learn both the Bhagavad Geeta through the Sanskrit Language, and the Sanskrit Language through the Bhagavad Geeta.  In this course, the Faculty will lead the students verse by verse, in sequence through the Bhagavad Geeta, while simultaneously unfolding both the meanings of the verses as well as the nuances of the language.   This course will introduce students to the following elements of the Sanskrit language: noun, consonant, and case endings, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, different verb types and usages, direct, indirect, and conditional speech, all illustrated using sentence formation and structure found in the Bhagavad Geeta.

Learning Objectives:

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Geeta in the following areas:

  1. Use of prefixes, suffixes, and indeclinables.
  2. Recognize additional Sanskrit words, prepositions, and phrases.
  3. Further imbibe building blocks of the language through everyday conversation.
  4. Understand the use of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and vocative case-endings.
  5. Continue practicing more with verbal roots (dhatu) and their different forms, tenses
